Dear all,

I'm new to Ansys, and I have a few questions that may seem too simple.
I'm somewhat confused about the nodal solution, element solution and
their relationship and difference, especially how the Ansys computes the
element solution such as von Mises plastic strain. Anyone can kindly
help me with some clarifications? Thanks.

These are all good questions, but they are elementary and you should be
asking your ASD or perhaps attending a basic ANSYS seminar. This list
isn't really the place for questions that elementary and that broad. You
should get some face time with your ASD or perhaps someone in the next
office with ANSYS background.

Hi Liao,

I don't think your question was answered, so the short answer to it is
that "nodal solution" is "averaged solution" whereas "element solution" is
"unaveraged solution."

Although displacements (and rotations, if present) are calculated at each
node, as you may know, stresses and strains are evaluated at the element's
integration point. These results must then be extrapolated (or copied) to
the nodes. By doing so, each node will have multiple values from each
element it is attached to - the averaged stress/strain value is considered
the "nodal solution" and are continous across elements whereas the
unaveraged stress/strain value ("element solution") retains the element's
stress/strain evaluation at the node and is discontinous across elements.

For quantities such as equivalent plastic strain, one cannot linearly
extrapolate nonlinear data, so, if plasticity or nonlinearities are
present, results are *copied* rather than lineary extrapolated from the
integration point to the node. Control of linear data is available with
ERESX command.
