Dear experts,

I am using SOLID70 and SOLID87 elements together in the thermal analysis. The SOLID87 elements have been used in the transition zone between fine and coarse meshes. While doing this an error message is obtained as follows:

" Possible brick to tetrahedron interface detected at area 15 on volume 10. The current element (type 3) does not support the required transition shape (pyramids). No transition between bricks and tetrahedra will be defined."

How significant the message is !!!! I have also used PLANE57 elements. First, meshing the area with PLANE57. Then extruding the meshed area into volume elements. At last the area elements have been deleted.

Are there any genuine pointers !!!

Is type 3 the SOLID70's? They can do pyramids, but the 87's cannot.

Maybe you need to do an ACLEAR to get rid of the 57's first too. Typically, it is recommended any more to use MESH200 elements for extrusions. Actually, I tend to do VSWEEP after a solid is made versus sweeping the elements out.

As Dan notes, use MESH200 elements to generate any needed "dummy mesh" - no need to delete them. Just make sure you have the correct element shape and number of nodes, keyopt(1).

And then choose either SOLID70 or SOLID87. Don't mix the mid-side node SOLID87's together with the SOLID70's in the same mesh. Or maybe you want SOLID90's if you need hexahedral & tetrahedral elements together? Read up on MSHAPE and MSHKEY commands for controlling the element shapes.

Versus debugging your script I input it cleared the volumes and areas and remeshed.

I have no idea why you are using SOLID87. Why not all 70's? Why transition at all? University version?

I set all the volumes to type 1, swept the volumes you had and tet meshed the ones in between and it worked. I'll put my input file in another email.

As I suspected you were trying to use the 87 for pyramids - they don't come in that shape.

Frankly, I'm not sure why you didn't map mesh the whole thing.

Was element count a problem?

The input file was just a log file. The "unnecessary" words were me poking around. If you cut and paste the whole thing in - it ought to work. Then you could interrogate the final resulting model to see what was there.

Sounds like you got it to go.
