As many of you know a motor stator is often constructed of a stack of steel sheets (lamination). These can be full circle or segmented. The stack can be connected many different ways too. I want to evaluate press fit of such an assembly into an aluminum housing and estimate the fit strength across temperature extremes. To this end I have an ANSYS question and a practical question:

ANSYS Question: Is there an appropriate approximation (material modification perhaps) of the laminated stator that will let me estimate fit loads? I want to look at torque to slip under LMC at hot extreme and housing stress under MMC at cold extreme.

Practical question: Should I simply accept that CAE is not the answer in this case? Seems like I could measure interference and test press load on a bench. Then use the closed form solution of cylinder-cylinder press fit to estimate the effective stiffness (modify modulus) of the laminated stator. Then estimate the thermal extremes from that correlation. Is that an appropriate approach?

Okay a third question: After testing to find the "correlated" cylinder of the laminated steel stator, could I go back to ANSYS to see evaluate the effects of a complex housing?
